I made it my mission in Rome to eat as much as humanly possible. Here’s what I ate in Rome:
La Zanzara– I had the Eggs Benedict here with cheese sauce and, oh my lord, it was good. It’s also close to the Vatican so perfect to fill up before a big day pushing through the crowds to get a glimpse of the Sistine Chapel.
San Crispino – This is an inconspicuous gem just around the corner from the Trevi Fountain. It’s unceremonious and simple. They don’t even have a Gelateria sign out front. The things is, they’re so damn good, they don’t need it. I had the most perfect combination of honey, caramel and pistachio flavours and it was amazing.
Gelateria del Teatro – Conversely, presentation is everything at del Teatro. You can watch them making the ice-cream through the front window, and the finished product is beautifully displayed. They have really interesting flavours like fig, cheese and almond or rosemary, honey and lemon.
Cafe to study/read/write
Circus Art Cafe – Order an espresso in this colourful, retro cafe and sit for an hour or two catching up on some reading (or writing blog posts about all you’ve seen in the Eternal City) while bopping along to Beatles tunes in the background.
The 4pm munchies
La Prosciutteria – This popular little den was filled with animated locals and had such great energy it draws you in from the street. The energetic staff will ensure your tastebuds are tantalised with magnificent wine and platters of local meats and cheeses.
Da Augusto – This traditional osteria in charming Trastevere is wildly popular for its relatively cheap classic Roman food. They open at 8pm, but be sure to arrive a little early to join the queues waiting for a table (they don’t take reservations). I had pasta followed by a beef roll. Then a cheeky tiramisu for dessert. It was all so tasty and delicious and the energetic ambiance made the place feel so lively.
There’s so many places to choose from in the capital city of one of the world’s best countries for foodies. My stomach could only eat so much in my four days there so please let me know if you have any other good places for me to try next time.
